3 Things to Consider When Buying Outdoor Speakers

As the weather gets warmer, we all find more and more reasons to spend time outside. Whether you’re doing some yardwork, relaxing with a good book to read or having fun with family and friends over a meal, spending time on your deck or patio becomes more enjoyable when you have your favorite tunes playing in the background.

If you are looking to purchase a set of these speakers, you must take certain things into account first.

1. Speaker Type

There are two types of speakers that are well-suited for the outdoor environment. The first are the permanently installed ones, which can provide a detailed, immersive sound on a deck, porch or backyard. These are passive stereo speakers that get power and signal from a home receiver. They come with mounting hardware and can stand up to the elements well. The second type are the Bluetooth® speakers. If you want your music to be played wirelessly from your mobile phone, these speakers are the way to go. They’re convenient and, most of all, portable. This way, you can bring them inside when not in use.

2. Speaker Size

You must see to it that outdoor speakers you’re looking to place on your deck, patio or porch are properly sized. And no, it’s not the exterior dimensions we’re talking about, but the cones inside the speakers. Cone size is almost always directly proportional to the sound quality. Small outdoor speakers don’t provide the richness and depth of the audio compared to their larger counterparts, which can provide mid- to sub-bass sound reproduction. Bigger might always be better, but they can be hard to conceal from view.

3. Speaker Brand and Material Quality

Like most electronics, outdoor speakers should always carry some sort of warranty. Depending on the brand you choose, you may get warranties that last only between two to five years or those that provide a lifetime option. As for the material quality, the cones can either be made of aluminum or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The former, however, is much preferred because these cones are more lightweight and durable. The rubber surrounds of the speaker cones should also be considered. They must be of great quality; otherwise, the material could become brittle and crack over time.
