4 Common Home Theater Problems and How to Fix Them

A smart home theater system can be a bit complicated. You have a combination of electronic components with too many wires to sort out and settings to be cognizant of. It is unsurprisingly easy for things to go south, and you may be faced with an array of issues. In this helpful guide, a smart home installation company breaks down some of the most common problems homeowners encounter with their home theater systems and how to fix them.

1. You are not getting any sound at all. Nobody wants to spend hours arranging every piece of equipment and fiddling with HDMI inputs only to end up with no sound coming out of the speakers. To fix the problem, unplug your receiver from the power source, and then check if your AC receiver is connected properly. Make sure the power cable is fully inserted, and the speaker wires have been carefully pushed inside. If this attempt fails, try navigating the on-screen settings menu, and start testing various speaker settings. This should solve the problem quickly.

2. Your front speakers don’t sound right. In many cases, there is an issue with the speaker size settings. If your setup consists of a pair of floor-standing speakers, set the size of your speakers to “large”. If your front speakers are a satellite type, then pick “small”.

If this does not solve your problem, a custom home automation expert recommends adjusting your subwoofer’s crossover. You may have it set in a way that your front speakers are taking too much of the bass load, causing the distorted or muddy sound. Set it at 80 hertz (Hz), and go from there.

3. The universal remote does not function. First things first: make sure the batteries have a charge. You have got the appropriate source selected, and nothing stands between the receiver and your remote. If everything is hunky-dory, then it is time to get technical. Go online, and figure out whether your remote utilizes Infrared (IR) or Radio Frequency (RF). Do the same for your receiver. If your receiver uses RF, it will not effectively pick up a remote that uses IR. Fortunately, you can easily fix this mismatch by changing the setting on your receiver itself.

4. You are experiencing lag between sound and picture. If the sound is coming before the picture, it is because the system is taking too long to process the video. To solve this problem, look for a feature on your receiver’s on-screen menu labeled “audio delay”. Try adjusting it by a few milliseconds until the sound and the picture perfectly harmonize.
