An Alarming Need for Security System Permits

It’s always a good idea to install a security system, especially one with the most advanced technology in motion detection, facial recognition and automatic notification of the nearest police station (or even just you). Most of the time, it’s legal to install a security system yourself, unless you live in a gated community, and your homeowners’ association has contracted with a third-party service.

However, for alarms, it’s a different matter entirely. This is often a matter for false alarms as it could disrupt the entire street and frighten your neighbors. For responsible usage of security systems and alarms, some counties in the United States – particularly in the state of Virginia – require that homeowners apply for an alarm permit. We discuss that and more in today’s post.

When Do You Need a Permit

Different states and counties have different rules and regulations when it comes to applying for security system permits. In general, installing one is the homeowner’s prerogative, but the way it interacts with you, such as how it notifies police stations, issues an alarm or its control functions, might need a permit.

This is especially true for custom home automation that links with security systems. Some security camera systems like Amazon’s Ring camera and Google Nest don’t need state, county or municipal permits to install. In fact, what they need is your permission; these devices tap into the cloud and connect to an all-around smart home system, which means you are exchanging a measure of your privacy for security.

Most of the time, however, a comprehensive security system that requires electrical work needs a permit, more so for the electrical portion than the security part. In addition, some locales need permits when the security system automatically “calls” the police or fire departments, especially for commercial establishments.

How About Virginia?

Most counties in Virginia, including Arlington and Fairfax, require permits for alarms, especially for false alarms. You can check your local county or municipality webpage for a copy of the permit form that you need to fill out. Note that if you’ve hired a third-party contractor to install your security system, you, as the homeowner, are required to fill the form out, not your contractor.
