In-Ceiling vs. In-Wall Speakers: Which One Is Best?

It can be difficult to set up your surround speakers when you have little space to spare for speaker cables and stands. Today, we take a look at two of the most popular solutions, in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, and their pros and cons.

In-Ceiling Speakers

In-ceiling speakers are downward-firing speakers nested into the ceiling, which can be purchased individually or as a set. The cones are not set in a box like standard speakers and are typically circular in shape. One of its key features is it can be configured without affecting your floor plan as the wiring and connections are hidden behind the ceiling boards. In-ceiling speakers can be installed throughout the house, which can let you pipe in music during parties, or if you don’t want to miss a live game as you move from one room to another.

It’s important to note that due to their size – in-ceiling speakers are typically 6.5 inches in size – they’re not as loud as standard speakers. They can be supplemented with a bass speaker installed close to the floor, but this means buying additional speakers.

In-Wall Speakers

In-wall speakers are closer in appearance to standard speakers: the cone (or cones), wiring and connectors are housed in a speaker box, with the addition of mounting brackets. Audio is fired horizontally, which creates a more conventional listening experience. Custom home automation contractors recommend in-wall speakers for home theaters because they produce a louder sound across all audible frequencies and create a large sound stage. Since these speakers are bulkier, this means they are more visible, they take up more wall space, and they cost more.

Which One Is Best for You?

One is neither better or worse than the other; it depends on how you’re using them. If you need speakers for casual listening or just need a set that’s virtually invisible, then in-ceiling speakers are ideal. If you need speakers that can handle loud sounds from your home theater system or turntable deck, in-wall speakers are a great choice.
