Qualities of a Good CCTV System

Video surveillance is a great security feature. For many homeowners, it’s a necessity to ramp up security and give yourself some peace of mind. When it’s time to actually get one though, you may find that finding the “right” closed circuit television (CCTV) system for your home is far from straightforward.

Ample Coverage

Your new CCTV system should have ample coverage of the area it needs to survey. While this is ultimately dependent on your preference, the critical areas should include entry points and back areas. Fortunately, many CCTV systems now have surveillance with a 360 degree dome or pan-tilt-zoom cameras that provide extensive coverage of the area.

Good Resolution

Even more important is the resolution of the surveillance system you’re installing. It’s great having a near all-encompassing coverage, but it won’t work if the video recording has poor quality. Many custom home automation companies recommend CCTV systems to have a minimum of 5.0 megapixels or at least a 1080 pixel resolution. This is about 25 times higher than regular CCTV cameras, but is necessary if the system covers a relatively wide area.

Easy-to-Use Recording System

Finally, your new CCTV system must have a reliable video management system to support it. All CCTV cameras capture videos and record it to a memory card, which requires a dedicated digital video recorder (DVR). Network video recorders (NVR) are also available.

It’s also a good idea to consider remote access options for your CCTV recordings. Thanks to advances in technology and automation, it’s now possible to check your captured footage on the phone.
