Tips on Finding the Best Placement for Your Subwoofer

A subwoofer adds depth and realism, allowing you to feel the sound when watching a movie or listening to music. But to ensure a great experience, it’s important that you find the right location for your subwoofer, especially in a home theater system.

Keep reading as we share some essential tips for the right placement of your subwoofer.

Do the Trial-and-Error Method

Put on an audio track with heavy bass. Then, move yourself and the subwoofer around the room until you find the spot you prefer. Make sure it’s optimized for your favorite seating area because the bass won’t sound the same throughout the room.

Consider the Wires

If your subwoofer’s receiver has wires, you’ll be constrained by where you can place it. To solve this dilemma, look for a space where people aren’t likely to trip over any wires. Another way to address this is to buy a wireless sub.

Measure the Distance From the Wall

This is applicable particularly to ported subwoofers as they have small holes in the back to allow proper airflow. In general, subwoofers should be placed at one to two times the diameter of the port away from a wall. Placing your subwoofer right against a wall will cause bass waves to reflect, which leads to rumbling sounds and harsh bass tones. There’s also a chance that your bass will reverberate through the wall, which can disturb your neighbors.

Don’t Place It in Corners

Placing your subwoofer in a corner causes the bass waves to bounce off the wall in different directions, often crossing over each other on their way back. This can result in crushing bass tones, which you won’t want to hear from your home theater audio system.
